flashback to…

1923
In my Legal Rights of Teachers and Student's class we learned about different things that can change to make rules and contracts unreasonable. To prove her point she gave us a teacher contract from the Ogden School District in 1923. Some of the policies are so strange to the modern world.

Teachers Contract Ogden 1923

  1. Not to get married. This contract becomes null and void if the teacher marries.

  2. Not to keep the company of men.

  3. TO be home between the hours of 8:00 P.M. and 6 A.M. unless in attendance at a school function.

  4. Not to loiter downtown ice cream parlors.

  5. Not to leave town at any time without the permission of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

  6. Not to smoke cigarettes or to drink wine, beer, or whisky. This contract becomes null and void if the teacher is caught drinking wine, beer, or whisky.

  7. Not to ride in a carriage with any man except her brother and father.

  8. Not to dress in bright colors.

  9. Not to dye hair.

  10. Not to wear dresses more than two inches about the ankle.

  11. To wear at least two petticoats.

  12. To clean and scrub the school every week.

It's like Afganistan, practically. I'm glad things have changed.
